Biography

The Woodbox Gang, an American band from Herod, Illinois, later based in Makanda, Illinois, was formed in 1999 by dobro player Brad Bolin and brothers Hugh DeNeal (guitar, kazoo, vocals) and Brian DeNeal (bass). The trio initially gained attention with their eclectic style of bluegrass music, which they described as "caustic acoustic" and "trashcan Americana". Their debut album, also called Trashcan Americana, was released in 2000. Bolin left the band briefly but also rejoined in 2000 along with Alex Kirt, who contributed to a variety of instruments including jug percussion and washboard. The band's lineup continued to evolve, with Greg Edwards (bass), Ratliff Dean Thiebaud (guitar and vocals), and Dan Goett (banjo, mandolin, dobro, guitar) joining later. Subsequent albums include Wormwood (2001), Born With a Tail (2003), Drunk as Dragons (2007), and White Trash Voodoo (2018).
