Biography

The Viscounts were an American pop group from New Jersey, formed in 1958. Their single "Harlem Nocturne", an Earle Hagen instrumental classic, was a hit in 1959, reaching #52 on the US Billboard Hot 100 in early 1960. It was re-released in 1965 and reached #39 for the second time. The single and album of the same name were originally recorded for Madison Records, then both were reissued in 1965 on the Amy label, the latter edition having a slightly different track list than the Madison edition. The band included brothers Bobby Spievak (guitar) and Joe Spievak (bass, died February 22, 2020), saxophonist Harry Haller (died January 18, 2011), organist and pianist Larry Vecchio (died January 10, 2013) and drummer Clark Smith (died December 14, 2002).
