Biography
The Three Johns are an English post-punk/indie rock band formed in 1981 in Leeds. The group consisted of guitarist Jon Langford, vocalist John Hyatt, and bassist Phillip "John" Brennan, augmented by a drum machine. They signed with CNT Records in 1982, releasing two singles and an EP, including "English White Boy Engineer", which addressed apartheid in South Africa. The band's left-wing leanings were evident in their music and album art, notably on Atom Drum Bop (1984). They regularly appeared in the UK Indie Chart during the mid-1980s with singles such as "A.W.O.L." and "Death of the European", which reached number 3 on the charts. After a disastrous US tour, they split up in late 1988 but reformed in 1990 and released Eat Your Sons. They disbanded again and reformed in 2012, performing intermittently through 2017. Vocalist John Hyatt died on December 4, 2023, after suffering from neck and head cancer.
