Biography
The Stovall Sisters, consisting of Nettie, Lillian, and Rejoyce Stovall, were an American gospel trio born in Kentucky and raised in Indianapolis. The sisters began their musical journey at a young age, touring with the family gospel group in the Midwest and South. In the late 1950s, the family migrated to Oakland, California, where Nettie, Lillian, and Rejoyce eventually formed the Stovall Sisters, briefly including their youngest sister, Jeanie Stovall. Their breakthrough came with the release of their self-titled album The Stovall Sisters (1970) on Reprise Records, which included the funk/soul track "Hang On In There." The trio also provided background vocals for Norman Greenbaum's iconic rock/gospel song "Spirit in the Sky" (1969). They were inducted into the West Coast Blues Hall of Fame in 2007 and reunited to perform live and in studio sessions for a new generation of music.
