Biography

The Spliffs were an Australian pop rock band formed in Townsville in 1985 by university friends Ian Christensen, Andrew Reid, Tim Corcoran, Jamie Forsberg, and John Watson. Their initial breakthrough came from winning a local battle of the bands competition with their four-song repertoire. The group released their debut single "You Know What They'll Say" in 1986, followed by the seven-track extended play House of Seven in 1987, produced by Alan Thorne. Relocating to Sydney, they signed with Harbour Agency and gained significant gigs through them. The Spliffs disbanded in 1988 after a van crash destroyed their equipment. Their single "Sixteen" was nominated for the ARIA Award for Best Independent Release at the ARIA Music Awards of 1989. Bass guitarist John Watson later formed Eleven: A Music Company and managed acts such as silverchair, Missy Higgins, and Gotye.
