Biography

The Silk Road Ensemble is a key component of Silkroad, an arts-based project founded by the internationally renowned cellist and 18-time Grammy winner Yo-Yo Ma. The ensemble is a loose collective of around 60 musicians, composers, arrangers, storytellers and visual artists who combine their talents under the guidance of Yo-Yo to perform works across a broad spectrum of composers including Dmitri Yanov-Yanovsky and the Chinese film score composer Zhao Jiping. Yo-Yo's personal success makes him an influential figure within the field of classical music and this has enabled him to promote Silkroad as a significant cultural organisation with a strong affiliation to Harvard University and it draws many of its members from around the surrounding educational community of Harvard. The idea behind the Silk Road Ensemble is to combine the type of musical and cultural influences which are found along the route of the ancient Silk Road and which helped shape international culture when the Silk Road was a vital trading connection with China. To this end the ensemble have performed in many regions that can be found along the original route including Iran, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, India, the Kyrgyz Republic and Tajikistan. The ensemble were nominated for a Grammy Award in 2011 and have recorded a number of critically acclaimed albums.
