The Seldom Scene is an American bluegrass band formed in 1971 in Bethesda, Maryland, by John Starling, Mike Auldridge, Ben Eldridge, Tom Gray, and John Duffey. The group began practicing in Ben Eldridgeâs basement and performing in local clubs where they cultivated a progressive bluegrass style that blended traditional instrumentation with contemporary songwriting. Their debut studio album, Act I, was released in 1972, followed by Act II and Act III in 1973, establishing the bandâs presence on the regional circuit. Over the next decades, the lineup evolved: Phil Rosenthal joined in 1977, Lou Reid and T. Michael Coleman in 1986, and Moondi Klein in 1994, while founding members left or passed away. The group signed with Sugar Hill Records and later Smithsonian Folkways, producing albums such as Scenechronized (2007), which received a Grammy nomination for Best Bluegrass Album, and Long Timeâ¦Seldom Scene (2014), which won awards at the Independent Music Awards in 2015. The Seldom Scene has remained active, continuing to record and perform with a rotating lineup.
