Biography

Formed in Macon, Georgia in 1980, disco, funk, and soul trio The Reddings was founded by by soul legend Otis Redding’s sons Dexter (vocals, bass) and Otis Redding III (guitar) along with their cousin Mark Lockett (keyboards). The group signed to Believe in a Dream Records – a subsidiary of CBS Records – and issued their first single, “Remote Control,” which became an international hit. The single, which rose to Number 6 on Billboard’s Soul / R&B Singles chart and Number 89 on the Hot 100, was the first track lifted from their 1980 debut album The Awakening. The Reddings released their second album, Class, in 1981, which featured the singles “You’re the Only One” and “Class (Is What You Got).” Their third album, Steamin’ Hot, was released in 1982 and included their version of the Otis Redding classic “(Sittin’ On) The Dock of the Bay,” which climbed to Number 55 on Billboard’s Hot 100 Singles chart. The Reddings were unable to maintain their commercial success with albums such as Back to Basics (1983) and If Looks Could Kill (1985) and after the release of their 1988 self-titled album, which managed to reach Number 88, the trio split up. Otis Redding III died of cancer on April 19, 2023. He was 59 years old.
