Biography

The Nick Straker Band, an English pop music group from London, was formed in 1979. The band was led by musician and vocalist Nick Straker, who had previously played with Dennis Bovell's Matumbi, a dub and roots reggae band. The band's lineup included Straker along with Tony Mansfield, Tony Hibbert, David McShera, Pete Hammond, and Phil Towner. Their breakthrough came with the release of "A Walk In The Park"n in June 1979 on the Pinnacle label, which peaked at number 20 on the UK Singles Chart in 1979, seeing debut album Future's Above My Head appear the same year. Their most successful song in the US came in 1980: "A Little Bit of Jazz", which spent one week at Number 1 on the Hot Dance Music/Club Play Chart. The Nick Straker Band continued to release singles throughout the early 1980s, including "Leaving On The Midnight Train" (1980) and "Straight Ahead" (1982). In 2005, they released a new single, "A Walk In the Park", which marked a return to music after many years.
