Biography

The Hub is an American computer network music ensemble formed in 1986. The group consists of composers and hardware designers John Bischoff, Tim Perkis, Chris Brown, Scot Gresham-Lancaster, Mark Trayle, and Phil Stone. Emerging from the League of Automatic Music Composers, the ensemble debuted at The Network Muse Festival in San Francisco in 1986. They transitioned from ad-hoc computer interaction to using a central hub for network data, allowing for complex collaborations. In 1987, the band performed one of the first telematic concerts at the Clocktower in New York. The Hub released the albums The Hub in 1989 and Wreckin' Ball in 1994. Their most recognized composition, “Stuck Note” by Gresham-Lancaster, has been covered by various laptop orchestras. After a hiatus that ended in 2004, the ensemble resumed performing internationally. In 2008, they released the box set The Hub: Boundary Layer. The group was awarded the Giga-Hertz Prize for lifetime achievement in electronic music in 2018.
