British jazz group the Don Rendell/Ian Carr Quintet was formed by two popular London, England-based jazz musicians: tenor saxophonist Don Rendell (born in Plymouth, England March 4, 1926) and trumpeter Ian Carr (born in Dumfries, Scotland on April 21, 1933). Both musicians had been busy but came together to create a quintet specifically to showcase original material, either written by the leaders themselves or their friends. The Don Rendell/Ian Carr Quintetâs first album was Shades of Blue (1965), followed by Dusk Fire (1966), Phase III (1968), Live (1969), and Change Is (1969). The groupâs eclectic and unique sound caught the attention of critics and audiences alike. In the Melody Maker jazz polls, the Don Rendell/Ian Carr Quintet was voted top small group for three years running (1967 to 1969) and Ian Carr was voted top trumpeter those same three years. The band split in 1970 and Don Rendell and Ian Carr pursued different musical paths with the latter musician joining prog rock band Nucleus. The groupâs catalog has been reissued several times on CD and on vinyl. Ian Carr died on February 25, 2009 at the age of 75. Don Rendell died on October 20, 2015 at the age of 89.
