Biography

The Davis Sisters, an American gospel group founded in 1945 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, consisted of Ruth ("Baby Sis") Davis and her sisters Thelma, Audrey, Alfreda, and Edna. Imogene Greene joined the group in 1950, later replaced by Jackie Verdell. Raised in the Fire-Baptized Holiness Church, the Davis Sisters were among the first female groups to sing "hard gospel," achieving a big sound by positioning themselves several steps behind the microphone due to Ruth's powerful voice. Their debut performance was at their parents' home in 1946. The group signed their first recording contract in 1947. Notable releases include "You're Gone/Sorrow and Pain" (1953) and "Lonely and Blue/Lying Brown Eyes" (1956).
