The Critters were an American popârock group formed in Plainfield, New Jersey, in 1964 when singerâguitarist Donâ¯Ciccone joined the local band the Vibratones, which included Jimmyâ¯Ryan, Kenâ¯Gorka, Jackâ¯Decker, Chrisâ¯Darway and saxophonist Bobâ¯Podstawski. The newly named band signed to Musicor Records and released the single "Georgianna" in 1964, followed by a move to Kapp Records. The groupâs breakthrough came with the 1965 single "Youngerâ¯Girl", which reached Number 38 on the UK Singles Chart in Julyâ¯1966, and the 1966 hit "Mr.â¯Dieingly Sad", which peaked at Number 17 on the U.S. pop chart. Subsequent releases, including Touchâ¯'nâ¯Goâ¯withâ¯theâ¯Critters (1968) and Critters (1969), were supported by touring across the United States and occasional collaborations with former members such as Jeffâ¯Pelosi and Bobâ¯Spinella. The band disbanded in 1967 after several members were drafted, but reâformed in 2007 with Donâ¯Ciccone and Jimmyâ¯Ryan, producing the album Timeâ¯Pieces before dissolving again in 2013. Donâ¯Ciccone died of a heart attack on 8â¯Octoberâ¯2016, ending the legacy of a group that achieved notable chart success in the midâ1960s.
