Biography

The Critters were an American pop‑rock group formed in Plainfield, New Jersey, in 1964 when singer‑guitarist Don Ciccone joined the local band the Vibratones, which included Jimmy Ryan, Ken Gorka, Jack Decker, Chris Darway and saxophonist Bob Podstawski. The newly named band signed to Musicor Records and released the single "Georgianna" in 1964, followed by a move to Kapp Records. The group’s breakthrough came with the 1965 single "Younger Girl", which reached Number 38 on the UK Singles Chart in July 1966, and the 1966 hit "Mr. Dieingly Sad", which peaked at Number 17 on the U.S. pop chart. Subsequent releases, including Touch 'n Go with the Critters (1968) and Critters (1969), were supported by touring across the United States and occasional collaborations with former members such as Jeff Pelosi and Bob Spinella. The band disbanded in 1967 after several members were drafted, but re‑formed in 2007 with Don Ciccone and Jimmy Ryan, producing the album Time Pieces before dissolving again in 2013. Don Ciccone died of a heart attack on 8 October 2016, ending the legacy of a group that achieved notable chart success in the mid‑1960s.
