Biography
Formed in 1964 in Salisbury, England, Dave Dee, Dozy Beaky, Mick & Tich (DDDBM&T) is a pop rock band that came together in the wake of the success of groups like The Beatles and The Rolling Stones. Blending pop, rock, and mod styles, the group stood out thanks to their eccentric sense of style and outlandish stage performances. The group â which was named after their collective nicknames â originally featured vocalist David âDave Deeâ Harman, bassist Trevor âDozyâ Ward-Davies, guitarist John âBeakyâ Dymond, drummer Michael âMickâ Wilson, and guitarist Ian âTichâ Amey. The members had all been involved in other bands stretching back to the late 1950s but didnât achieve success until the came together initially as Dave Dee and the Bostons. After the classic line-up had solidified, they were approached by songwriters Ken Howard and Alan Blaikely, who changed their name to Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick & Tich in order to focus on their separate personalities. They signed with Fontana Records and released their self-titled debut album in June 1966, which included the hit âHold Tight!â (UK number 4). The album climbed to number 11 in the UK and number 4 in Germany. Their next album, If Music Be the Food of Love⦠Prepare for Indigestion, was released six months later and included the hit singles âYou Make It Moveâ (UK number 26), âHideawayâ (UK number 10), and the massively successful âBend It!â, which hit number 2 in the UK and rose to the top of the charts in Germany, New Zealand, and South Africa. The single was also in the Top 10 in the Netherlands and Ireland. However, the group didnât get any traction in the US, which was a country that immersed itself in the âBritish Invasion.â The all-important US market began to soften to the sound of DDDBM&T and a re-recording of âBend It!â landed at number 110 in 1966. The groupâs sound began to evolve and moved away from the Beat music sounds of their early recordings, embracing freakbeat, mod, and other sounds sweeping the UK. Their 1966 single âSave Meâ was an international hit but didnât bother the US charts. The group released more hits including âTouch Me, Touch Meâ and âOkay!â before finally scoring a minor hit in the US with their single âZabadak!â in 1967. The groupâs most successful single came in 1968 with the release of âThe Legend of Xanadu,â which climbed to number 1 in the UK, Ireland, and New Zealand and landed in the Top 10 in Australia, Belgium, Canada, Germany, South Africa, and the Netherlands. However, the single only rose to number 123 in the US. Although they achieved success with several hit singles and albums â including If No One Sang (1968) and Together (1969) â Dave Dee left the band to pursue a solo career and the remaining group members continued as Dozy, Beaky, Mick & Tich for one more album â Fresh Ear (1970) â and several singles but split up in 1973. The original group did reunite several times, but beginning in 1976, the band existed with only a few original members at any given point. Dave Dee died on January 9, 2009, followed by Dozy on January 13, 2015, and Tich on February 15, 2024.
