Biography
The Coctails, a musical group from Chicago, formed while members Archer Prewitt, Mark Greenberg, John Upchurch, and Barry Phipps were attending the Kansas City Art Institute. The band's early releases included Hip Hip Hooray! (1990) and Songs for Children EP (1991). Known for their experimental approach, often rotating instruments during live sets, they released several albums, including Long Sound (1993) and Peel (1994). Despite being initially labeled as a loungecore band due to their name and covers of Martin Denny tunes, The Coctails explored avant-garde jazz and indie rock in their later years. They disbanded in 1995 but reunited for various performances, including at Lounge Ax before its closure in December 2004, and released Let's Enjoy in 2005. In 2010, the band reunited to contribute a recording of Erik Satie's "Gymnopédie No. 1" to the charity album Sing Me to Sleep - Indie Lullabies.
