Biography

Blues-rock group the Climax Blues Band, originally performing as The Climax Chicago Blues Band, were formed in 1968 in Stafford, England. The band consisted of Colin Cooper, Pete Haycock, Derek Holt, Richard Jones, George Newsome, and Arthur Wood. They began their career playing the local gig circuit and were soon discovered by a scout for EMI's Parlophone label, leading to the release of their debut album The Climax Chicago Blues Band in February 1969. Their early albums showcased their blues-rock sound. In 1970, they moved to EMI's Harvest Records subsidiary and released more rock-oriented albums. The band's line-up stabilised in 1972 with the addition of John Cuffley on drums, and they shortened their name to Climax Blues Band. Their album Rich Man (November 1972), produced by Richard Gottehrer, marked their first chart entry in the US. In the mid-1970s, they released notable albums such as FM/Live (October 1973) and singles such as the hit "Couldn't Get It Right" from Gold Plated (October 1976), which reached number 10 on the UK Singles Chart and number three on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1977. The band continued to evolve their sound, incorporating pop-rock elements on albums like Flying the Flag (September 1980). Throughout their career, Climax Blues Band released 22 albums and toured extensively, splitting up in 1984, but reuniting in 1986 and continuing to perform and record intermittently since then.
