Biography
The Boswell Sisters, consisting of Martha, who lived from June 9, 1905 to July 2, 1958; Connie, who lived from December 3, 1907 to October 11, 1976; and Helvetia âVetâ Boswell, who lived from May 20, 1911 to November 12, 1988, was an American close harmony singing trio from New Orleans. The sisters began their musical training classically but quickly shifted to jazz after moving to New Orleans in 1914. They gained local fame in the early 1920s performing at vaudeville theaters and on radio. Their breakthrough came in the 1930s when they attained national prominence with hits like the Number 1 single âThe Object of My Affectionâ (1935) and collaborations with prominent swing musicians such as the Dorsey Brothers, Glenn Miller, Benny Goodman, and Artie Shaw. The trio released several singles, including its debut âI'm Gonna Cry (Cryin' Blues)â (1925), before disbanding in 1936. Connee Boswell continued her solo career in radio, film, and television for an additional quarter century.
