Biography
The Academic is an Irish indie rock band from Killucan, County Westmeath. The group consists of Craig Fitzgerald, Dean Gavin, and brothers Matthew and Stephen Murtagh. Their debut EP Loose Friends was released in 2015. In January 2016, the band represented Ireland at Eurosonic Noorderslag, leading to extensive festival bookings and radio airplay across Europe. The Academic's breakthrough came with the release of "Bear Claws" in 2017, which featured a viral live looper music video. Their debut studio album Tales from the Backseat was released in 2018, entering the Irish Albums Chart at Number 1 and earning an Album of the Year nomination at the Choice Music Prize in January 2019. The band signed to Capitol Records in May 2020 and released their second studio album Sitting Pretty in 2023, which also topped the Irish Albums Chart.
