Biography
Gordon Lee Beneke, known professionally as Tex Beneke, was born on February 12, 1914, in Fort Worth, Texas. He was a jazz musician, tenor saxophonist, singer, and big band leader who began playing the saxophone at age nine and started his professional career with bandleader Ben Young in 1935. His breakthrough came when he joined Glenn Miller's orchestra, contributing notable solos to "In The Mood" and vocals to "Chattanooga Choo Choo". Beneke appeared in films like Sun Valley Serenade (1941) and Orchestra Wives (1942). After Miller disbanded his orchestra to join the U.S. Army Air Forces in 1942, Beneke briefly worked with Horace Heidt before joining the Navy. Following Miller's disappearance in 1944, Beneke led the Glenn Miller Ghost Band from 1946 to 1950. Post-Miller, Beneke continued his career independently, collaborated with artists like Eydie Gorme, and appeared on television shows. He passed away on May 30, 2000.
