Biography

The French new wave band Taxi Girl were one of the most distinctive and best known bands to emerge in France during the post-punk era. Their music combined elements of Kraftwerk and The Stooges and presented it in a style heavily influenced by the New Romantic movement. The band benefited significantly from the patronage of UK band The Stranglers who not only invited Taxi Girl to perform on their 'La Folie' tour but also provided practical support when Stranglers' bassist and Francophile Jean Jacques Burnell produced their second album augmented by drummer Jet Black on drums. Black stood in on drums after Taxi Girl's original drummer Pierre Wolfsohn died in 1981. Over the years there has been a high attrition rate amongst Taxi Girl members with two other members dying at relatively young ages. Daniel Darc, the band's founder and one-time producer of Madonna passed away aged 53 in 2013 and keyboard player Laurent Sinclair died in 2019. During their career the band produced a series of five mini-albums and one critically-acclaimed full length album, 'Seppuku', which was released in 1981.
