Biography

Symphony Nova Scotia, an orchestra based in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, was founded in 1983 with 13 full-time musicians. The ensemble began under the direction of conductor Boris Brott and Board president Brian Flemming, initially operating from January to May each season. By 1987, the orchestra had expanded to 39 musicians. In 1987, Austrian conductor Georg Tintner succeeded Boris Brott, leading Symphony Nova Scotia through six recordings, tours to Ontario and Quebec, and community outreach programs including a production of The Nutcracker. The orchestra faced financial struggles in the mid-1990s but restructured under Leslie Dunner's leadership. Notable conductors include Bernhard Gueller (2002–2018) and Holly Mathieson, who first guest-conducted the orchestra in 2018. Symphony Nova Scotia has won four East Coast Music Awards for classical music and was known for its versatility and community engagement initiatives.
