Steve Lawrence, born Sidney Leibowitz on July 8, 1935, in Brooklyn, New York, and Eydie Gormé, born Edith Gormezano on August 16, 1928, in The Bronx, New York City, were an American pop vocal duo who began working together in 1954 on Tonight Starring Steve Allen. They formed the duo after being introduced by mutual friends. Their early recordings included "(Close Your Eyes) Take A Deep Breath" (1955) and their first EP, Sing The Golden Hits, which was released through Coral Records in 1960. The following year they signed with ABC-Paramount and released the album We Got Us. In 1957 Steve Lawrence And Eydie Gormé married.
Their career spanned over five decades, during which they became a ubiquitous presence on records, television variety shows, and in nightclubs from Las Vegas to the Catskills. Steve Lawrence And Eydie Gormé had numerous releases including the albums Cozy (1961), Two On The Aisle (1963), At The Movies (1963), It's Us Again (1964), and Together on Broadway (1967). They released their last US chart record on Warner Bros. Records in 1979 as Parker & Penny, titled "Hallelujah" with B-side "Broken Hearts, Broken Promises". In 1960, Steve Lawrence and Eydie Gormé won a Grammy Award for Best Performance by a Vocal Group or Chorus for their album We Got Us. Steve Lawrence and Eydie Gormé also recorded on various other labels including RCA, UAR, Time, DME His Master's Voice, and London.
In February 1968 to January 1969, Steve Lawrence and Eydie Gormé starred in the Broadway musical Golden Rainbow. They received a Film Advisory Board's Award of Excellence and a Television Critics Circle Award for From This Moment On, a tribute to Cole Porter. The duo was nominated for two Emmy Awards. Their tribute to George and Ira Gershwin named "Our Love Is Here To Stay" (1976) earned them an award nomination. They won another Emmy Award for their interpretation of the Great American Songbook titled Steve & Eydie Celebrate Irving Berlin (1979). In 2008 they were awarded with The Sammy Cahn Lifetime Achievement Award in Songwriting.
Steve Lawrence And Eydie Gormé had two children together. Steve continued performing after Eydie's retirement in 2009 and subsequent death on August 10, 2012, but passed away on March 7th, 2024 from complications arising from Alzheimer's disease.
