Biography

Sopor Aeternus & The Ensemble of Shadows is a German darkwave and dark folk musical project from Frankfurt that formed in 1989. The project was established by Anna-Varney Cantodea and a musician known as Holger, who met at the Frankfurt club Negativ. They began their career by producing several demo recordings, including Es reiten die Toten so schnell... (1989), “Rufus” (demo), and “Till Time and Times Are Done” (1992). Cantodea released the project's debut studio album, Ich töte mich jedesmal aufs Neue, doch ich bin unsterblich, und ich erstehe wieder auf; in einer Vision des Untergangs..., in 1994. The project's music is noted for incorporating gothic and neoclassical elements using instrumentation such as brass, woodwinds, and string quartets. Their extensive discography includes the studio albums Todeswunsch - Sous le soleil de Saturne (1995) and La Chambre d'Echo - Where the Dead Birds Sing (2004).
