Biography

Sophie Watillon was a Belgian viol player and teacher born on December 7, 1965, in Namur, Belgium. Raised in a musical family, she performed in numerous concerts with her family's baroque ensemble before beginning her formal studies of the viola da gamba at age 16 under Philippe Pierlot. She later completed advanced training with Wieland Kuijken and studied under Paolo Pandolfo at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis. During her studies, she joined the Ricercar Consort, and later performed with prominent ensembles such as Hesperion XXI, La Capella Reial de Catalunya, Le Concert des Nations, Cantus Köln, Poème Harmonique, and the Huelgas Ensemble. She also performed contemporary works, premiering compositions by Bernard Foccroulle, Pierre Bartholomée, and Arvo Pärt. Her pedagogical career included teaching at the Escola Superior de Música de Catalunya in Barcelona and leading the gamba class at the conservatory in Woluwé-Saint-Pierre. Her discography includes the albums The Art of the Viola bastarda, song and dance in music for viol in Italy (1994), Nicolas Hotman's Pièces de viole - Pièces de Théorbe (2002), and Christopher Simpson's The Seasons, The Months And Other Divisions Of Time (2005). She passed away on August 31, 2005, in Namur.
