Sonja Herholdt, born Sonja on December 1, 1952, in Nigel, South Africa, is a singer and actress known for her contributions to Afrikaans pop music. At age three, she performed at the local community recreation hall. Herholdt's breakthrough came when she recorded "Ek Verlang Na Jou" after appearing on Gwynneth Ashley Robin's show. The single went gold in South Africa. She released several albums including Sonja (1976), On Stage/In Die Kalklig (1978), and Waterblommetjies (1978). Herholdt won eight Sarie awards and was frequently the best-selling female artist in South Africa. She also ventured into acting, starring in Sing vir die Harlekyn (1979) and winning a Rapport Oscar-Award as Best Female Newcomer. In 1989, she performed at the Religious Broadcasting Corporation in Washington, coinciding with the release of her gospel album, The Warrior is a Child.
