Sleepercar was an alternative country rock band originating from the United States, formed in 2002 by Jim Ward. The project began as a solo endeavor for Ward, who had previously been a member of At the Drive-In and Sparta. The oldest Sleepercar song, "Fences Down", was written during one of At the Drive-In's final shows. After forming Sparta, Ward continued to work on Sleepercar material during downtime between albums and tours. In 2005, Sleepercar performed their first show in El Paso with a lineup that included Matthew Schmitz on drums and Clay Anderson on guitar. The band released their debut album West Texas in 2008. They toured extensively, supporting acts such as City and Colour in the summer of 2008 and Coldplay later that fall. In November 2015, Sleepercar released their second album Breathe & Count.
