Skallander is a New Zealand band, consisting of electronic musician Bevan Smith and jazz composer Matthew Mitchell. The duo began their musical journey under the moniker Skallander, with the name derived from a play on the Russian word for "cosmonaut suit." Their debut album, The Camels, was released in 2005 and received critical acclaim, including a 4.5/5 star review from Lindsay Davis of The Dominion Post. In 2007, they released their self-titled second album, Skallander. Their third album, Skallander II, was released in 2008 and featured dense mixes with multiple vocal layers per track. The band's innovative approach to music production earned them notable reviews, including praise from Amanda Mills of NZ Musician for its intricate sonic experimentation.
