Biography

Simon Keenlyside is a British operatic baritone born as Sir Simon Keenlyside on August 3, 1959, in London. He achieved professional recognition for a musical career characterized by his roles in major international opera houses and for creating the role of Prospero in the opera The Tempest. Keenlyside achieved professional recognition for a career that began after he was a boy chorister at St John's College School and studied voice at the Royal Northern College of Music. He achieved professional recognition for his operatic debut as Lescaut in the opera Manon Lescaut in 1987 and his professional debut as Count Almaviva in the opera The Marriage of Figaro in 1988. His recording career included the studio recording Marriage of Figaro (2004) which received a Grammy Award for Best Opera Recording in 2005. Keenlyside achieved professional recognition for creating the role of Winston Smith in the world premiere of the opera 1984 in 2005. His discography included the recital studio recording Tales of Opera (2007) which received a Gramophone Award. Keenlyside achieved professional recognition for being appointed a Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 2003 and receiving a knighthood in 2018. He achieved professional recognition for being awarded the title of Kammersänger by the Austrian government in 2017.
