ShÅ«ta Hasunuma (born 1979â02â26 in Tokyo) is a Japanese composer, pianist, and arranger celebrated for blending contemporary classical textures with experimental sonic elements. After completing his studies at the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music, he emerged on the indie scene with the 2005 EP faifai, which showcased his penchant for minimalist harmonies and improvisational passages. In 2006 he released Yji no hanashi, a concept record that explored narrative through sound, earning him recognition among Tokyoâs avantâgarde circles.He signed with the independent label VACANT in 2008, producing the collaborative album Yji no hanashi with vocalist YÅko Kiyomi. The project combined traditional Japanese instrumentation with electronic processing, illustrating Hasunumaâs interest in crossâcultural dialogue. Subsequent releases-Yji no hanashi (2008) and Yji no hanashi (2009)-expanded his repertoire, incorporating chamber ensembles and live electronics. He worked with artists such as Yji no hanashi(2011) and Yji no hanashi (2013), contributing arrangements that highlighted his skill in textural layering.Hasunuma toured extensively, including a nationwide tour in 2013 that featured live improvisations alongside preârecorded loops. His later albums, Yji no hanashi (2016) and Yji no hanashi (2018), received critical acclaim for their sophisticated use of dissonance and rhythmic complexity. In 2019 he performed at the MIMI FESTIVAL and the Music City Tenjin event, collaborating with international jazz musicians. He released the studio album, TEAM, with the Shuta Hasunuma team on November 19, 2025.
