Biography

Shilpa Ray, born circa 1980 in Brooklyn, New York, is an Indian-American singer-songwriter known for her DIY punk and experimental sound. She began her music career as a solo performer in 2003 and later formed the band Beat the Devil in 2005. After disbanding Beat the Devil, Ray formed Shilpa Ray and Her Happy Hookers in 2009. In 2013, Ray released her first EP under her own name, It's All Self Fellatio, on Nick Caveâs label Bad Seed Ltd. She continued to release albums including Last Yearâs Savage (2015), Door Girl (2017), and Portrait of a Lady (2022) with Northern Spy Records. Ray has collaborated with various artists, including Nick Cave.
