Singer, songwriter, and musician Shelby Flint â born in North Hollywood, California on September 17, 1939 â is best known for a pair of hit singles in the 1960s â âAngel on My Shoulderâ (1961) and âCast Your Fate to the Windâ (1966) â as well as providing vocals for several hits from television and motion picture soundtracks. Signed by songwriter and publisher Barry De Vorzen to the Cadence Records label, she released her first single, âI Will Love You,â in 1958. The single was not a hit, and she did not release another single until she signed do De Vorzonâs Valiant Records label and issued her folk music-inspired composition âAngel on My Shoulderâ in 1960. The song reached number 22 on the Billboard Hot 100 and was featured on her 1961 self-titled album. She released more singles â including a re-recording of âI Will Love Youâ â over the next few years but didnât achieve any chart success until her cover version of Vince Guaraldiâs âCast Your Fate to the Wind,â which reached number 11 on Billboardâs Adult Contemporary Singles chart. While her solo recording career slowed to a crawl as the 1960s became the 1970s, she found success as a session vocalist and sang lead on songs included on soundtracks to films such as Snoopy Come Home (1972), Breezy (1973), and most notably, Disneyâs The Rescuers, where her song âSomeoneâs Waiting for Youâ was nominated for Best Original Song in 1977. She also provided vocals for the song âTomorrow Is Another Dayâ from the same animated film.
