Carolyn Sue Hester, born on January 28, 1937, in Waco, Texas, is an American folk singer and songwriter. Her first album, Scarlet Ribbons (1958), was produced by Norman Petty. In 1960, she signed with Tradition Records and became known for songs like "The House of the Rising Sun" and "She Moved Through the Fair". Hester played a role in the early 1960s American folk music revival, helping launch Gerde's Folk City in 1960. In 1961, she invited Bob Dylan to play on her third album Carolyn Hester (1962), marking his first official studio session. She returned to recording and touring in the 1980s and was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award by the World Folk Music Association in 2003.
