September Mourning, an American alternative metal band, was formed in New York in 2009 by frontwoman Emily Lazar and Marc Silvestri. The project centered around a human-grim reaper hybrid named September navigating the worlds of the living and the dead. In early 2011, Lazar and Egert self-produced Melancholia, released on Repo Records exclusively in Germany. The band's first notable single, "Before the Fall", premiered in a TNA Wrestling commercial in 2012. They signed to Virgin Records in early 2014 and started writing their US debut album. In March 2016, they signed with Sumerian Records and released the full-length album Volume II in July of the same year. Notable tracks from this period include "Skin and Bones" and "20 Below", which peaked at number 39 on Hot Mainstream Rock Tracks in January 2017. The band became independent in 2019 and began work on their second EP, Volume III, releasing the single "Unholy" in July of that year.
