Biography

Selwyn Birchwood, born March 9, 1985, in Orlando, Florida, is an American blues guitarist, vocalist, and songwriter. He began playing guitar at age 13, initially focusing on popular non-blues music before discovering Jimi Hendrix and subsequently the blues genre. By 17, he was a dedicated blues fan, and attending a Buddy Guy concert at 18 solidified his path in music. At 19, he joined Sonny Rhodes' touring band, learning extensively from the veteran musician, including the lap steel guitar. Birchwood formed The Selwyn Birchwood Band in Tampa in 2010. The band competed in the International Blues Challenge in 2012 and won the band category in 2013. His debut album for Alligator Records, Don't Call No Ambulance, was released on June 10, 2014, and won a Blues Music Award for Best New Artist Album in 2015. Birchwood has toured extensively, performing at notable festivals and opening for artists like Robert Cray and Buddy Guy.
