Biography

F. Lamotte Smith, known professionally as Sherrick, was an American soul singer born on July 6, 1957, in Sacramento, California. Sherrick's professional breakthrough came when he was signed by producer Raynoma Gordy Singleton, former wife of Motown founder Berry Gordy. He began his career as the lead singer of the Motown group Kagny, who recorded a song for the Motown movie The Last Dragon in 1985. Sherrick signed with Warner Bros. Records in 1987 and released his self-titled debut album Sherrick, co-produced by Michael Stokes with Raynoma Gordy Singleton as executive producer. The album featured the hit single "Just Call", which reached number 8 on the US Billboard R&B chart, and a cover of the Originals' "Baby I'm for Real" which peaked at number 53. Additionally, Sherrick had two entries in the UK Singles Chart in 1987 with "Just Call" (number 23) and "Let's Be Lovers Tonight" (number 63). His debut album Sherrick also reached number 27 on the UK Albums Chart the same year. Despite his early success, Sherrick struggled with cocaine use disorder, which led to the premature end of his second album's production and his disappearance from the public eye in 1988. He died in Los Angeles on January 22, 1999, at the age of 41.
