Scott David Frankel, born on May 6, 1963 in Cleveland, Ohio, is an American composer known for his work in Broadway theatre. Frankel began his music education with piano lessons and attended Yale University, where he met playwright Doug Wright. His early career involved working as a music director, conductor, and pianist on various Broadway shows including Into the Woods and Les Misérables. Frankel's breakthrough as a composer came with his collaboration with lyricist/librettist Michael Korie, notably on the musicals Doll (2003) and Grey Gardens (2006), which premiered Off-Broadway and later transferred to Broadway. For Grey Gardens, Frankel received a Tony Award nomination along with the ASCAP Richard Rodgers New Horizons Award and The Frederick Loewe Award for Dramatic Composition. Subsequent works include Happiness (2009) and War Paint (2016/2017).
