Biography

The San Antonio Symphony Orchestra, founded in 1939 by Max Reiter, was a professional symphony orchestra based in San Antonio, Texas. The orchestra's early ambition is evidenced by the fact that the legendary violinist Jascha Heifetz was a guest artist during the first season. By 1943, the orchestra employed 75 professional musicians and had a budget exceeding $100,000, making it one of only 19 "major" orchestras in the country at that time. Reiter started an Opera Festival and created an Opera Chorus before his death in 1950. Victor Alessandro succeeded Reiter as music director, expanding the orchestra's scope to include Young People's Concerts. Financial difficulties led to the cancellation of much of the 1987–88 season and the 2003–04 season due to bankruptcy. Sebastian Lang-Lessing served as the orchestra's last music director from 2010 to 2020. In August 2022, the orchestra's musicians reformed as the San Antonio Philharmonic.
