Biography

James Michael Bernard (born 20â¯Septemberâ¯1925 in Nathiaâ¯Gali, India) was a British composer, arranger, and orchestrator best known for his work on Hammer Film Productions horror titles. After studying at the Royal College of Music under Herbert Howells and with Benjamin Britten, James Bernardâs breakthrough came with the score for The Quatermass Xperiment (1950), which attracted the attention of Hammerâs music director John Hollingsworth. He subsequently composed the music for The Curse of Frankenstein (1957), Dracula (1958), The Gorgon (1964), The Devil Rides Out (1968), and The Legend of the Seven Golden Vampires (1974). James Bernard also worked on nonâHammer projects such as Windomâs Way (1957), Torture Garden (1967), Nosferatu (1997), and Universal Horror (1998). He died in London on 12â¯Julyâ¯2001.
