Randy Edelman (born Juneâ¯10â¯1947 in Paterson, Newâ¯Jersey) is an American composer, pianist, conductor, and producer whose career spans film, television, and popular music. Raised in Teaneck, Newâ¯Jersey, he studied at the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music before moving to Newâ¯York, where he played piano in Broadway pit orchestras and produced solo albums that attracted recordings by Theâ¯Carpenters, Barryâ¯Manilow, and Dionne Warwick. Randyâ¯Edelman's first major release as a solo artist was the 1971 selfâtitled album Randyâ¯Edelman, followed by Farewellâ¯Fairbanks (1975) and Comeâ¯Seeâ¯theâ¯Paradise (1990), the latter yielding the single "Everybody Wants to Find a Bluebird" which reached the U.S. charts. His early work also included the single "Concrete and Clay" (1976), a cover of the Unitâ¯4â¯+â¯2 hit, which charted in the U.K. and Canada.In the late 1970s and early 1980s, Randyâ¯Edelman transitioned to film and television scoring, with his first notable score for the 1973 thriller Executiveâ¯Action. He gained prominence through a long partnership with director Ivanâ¯Reitman, scoring comedies such as Ghostbustersâ¯II (1989), Twins (1988), Kindergartenâ¯Cop (1990), and Theâ¯Mask (1994). His work on Theâ¯Distinguishedâ¯Gentleman (1992) and Gettysburg (1993) showcased his versatility across genres. In 1985, he composed the theme for the hit television series MacGyver, which became an element of the showâs identity. Randyâ¯Edelman's score for Dragonheart (1996) earned a Saturn Award nomination, and his theme for Theâ¯Quest (1996) became widely used in television advertising and film trailers. Randyâ¯Edelman received numerous accolades, including a BMI Richardâ¯Kirk Lifetime Achievement Award (2003), an honorary Doctorate of Fine Arts from the University of Cincinnati (2004), and the Goldspirit Award for Leapâ¯Year (2010). He has been nominated for a Goldenâ¯Globe, a BAFTA, and has won twelve BMI Awards. His music has been repeatedly licensed for NBC sports broadcasts, including the Olympic Games and the 1997 World Series, and has appeared in Disney films such as Mulan. In recent years, Randyâ¯Edelman released Aroundâ¯theâ¯Worldâ¯inâ¯80â¯Minutes (2024) and Waltzingâ¯onâ¯aâ¯Highâ¯Wire (2025), continuing to contribute to contemporary film soundtracks. Randyâ¯Edelman's catalog remains influential, with themes from Kindergartenâ¯Cop, Dragonheart, and Gettysburg frequently reused in trailers, advertisements, and award shows, marking his impact on American film and television music.
