Biography
Ruth Copeland, born in 1946 in Consett, County Durham, England, is a former pop, folk, funk, and soul singer. She began performing with local jazz band the Collegians at age 17 and moved to Detroit in 1965 to perform in clubs as a blues and folk singer. Copeland signed with Invictus Records in 1969 and released her debut single "The Music Box" under the group name the New Play. Her first solo album, Self Portrait, was released in 1970, featuring contributions from Parliament-Funkadelic musicians. Copeland's second album, I Am What I Am, followed in 1971. She also collaborated with George Clinton on Parliament's debut album Osmium (1970) and co-wrote several tracks for the group. Her third album, Take Me to Baltimore, was released by RCA Records in 1976. After retiring from music, Copeland re-emerged in the 2010s to discuss her career.
