Biography

Rufige Kru is the influential drum'n'bass alias of British producer and DJ Goldie (Clifford Price, born 19 September 1965 in Walsall, England), widely regarded as one of the foundational figures in the evolution of jungle and drum and bass music. Emerging in the early 1990s, Rufige Kru became synonymous with the dark, atmospheric, and experimental side of breakbeat culture, playing a key role in shaping the genre’s identity during its formative years. Initially conceived as a collaborative project between Goldie and other producers like DJ Kemistry and DJ Storm, Rufige Kru debuted with groundbreaking tracks on Reinforced Records, including the iconic Terminator (1992), which introduced time-stretching and pitch-shifting techniques that revolutionized drum and bass production. The project’s early material combined aggressive breakbeats with eerie pads and dystopian soundscapes, helping define the darkcore and techstep subgenres. Though Goldie would rise to mainstream prominence under his own name—most notably with the seminal Timeless album (1995)—he continued to use the Rufige Kru alias to explore deeper, more underground styles. Releases like Malice in Wonderland (2007) and Memoirs of an Afterlife (2009) on his own Metalheadz label reaffirmed Rufige Kru’s legacy as a vessel for innovation within the genre. In May 2025, Rufige Kru made a triumphant return with a new album, Alpha Omega, a collaboration with Submotive.
