River City Brass, a modified British-style brass band, was founded in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on November 21, 1981. The ensemble, consisting of 28 members including 25 brass players and 3 percussionists, made its public debut at the Carnegie Music Hall during Pittsburgh's British Festival. Under the direction of Robert Bernat, the band featured notable performers such as Robert Childs and Arthur Taylor. Within six years, River City Brass gained a national reputation and by the mid-1990s was recognized as one of America's premier brass ensembles. The group has since performed at prestigious venues worldwide, including the Adelaide Festival of the Arts and Musikfest. Their mission includes propagating American musical culture through performances, educational programs, and recordings. River City Brass operates a youth program, the River City Youth Brass Band, which has been active since 1986. The ensemble has been led by James Gourlay since August 2010.
