Richard Anthony Nunns, also known as Richard Nunns, was born on December 7, 1945, in Napier, New Zealand, a MÄori traditional instrumentalist of PÄkehÄ heritage. After studying at Matamata College, he did teacher training at Canterbury University. His interest in MÄori culture deepened while helping to build a marae in the Waikato region during his late 20s. Nunns gained prominence through his collaboration with fellow MÄori instrumentalist Hirini Melbourne, researching and reviving traditional MÄori instruments known as taonga pÅ«oro. After Melbourne's death in 2003, Nunns became the world's foremost authority on these instruments. He continued to perform and collaborate with various artists until his death on June 7, 2021. In 2009, he was awarded the Arts Laureate by the Arts Foundation of New Zealand.
