Biography

Riccardo Chailly is an Italian conductor whose adventurous style has endeared him to audiences and critics around the world. Currently he combines activities at Filarmonica della Scala in Milan and the Lucerne Festival Orchestra in Switzerland. His latest recording with the Lucerne Orchestra, 'Igor Stravinsky: Chant Funèbre, The Faun and The Shepherdess, Op. 2, Le Sacre du Printemps' came out in January 2018. Born in Italy, he studied with his composer father Luciano Chailly and at music conservatories in Perugia and Milan. Assistant conductor to Claudio Abbado at La Scala in Milan at 20, he made his conducting debut there in 1978. He conducted at the Salzburg Festival and the Lucerne International Music Festival first in 1984 and had stints as chief conductor of the Radio-Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, principal guest conductor of the London Philharmonic Orchestra, music director of the Teatro Comunale di Bologna and chief conductor of the Koninklijk Concertgebouworkest, Amsterdam. His recordings have included works by Bach, Brahms, Bruckner, Mahler, Mendelssohn, Schumann, Shostakovich and Verdi, and he received a Grammy Award nomination for Best Orchestral Performance in 1999 for 'Varése: The Complete Works' conducting the Asko Ensemble and Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. His 2007 release, 'Mendelssohn/Bruch: Concertos & Romance' with violinist Janice Jansen and the Gewandhaus Orchestra, went to number 20 on the Billboard Classical Albums Chart and 'Brahms: Violin Concerto, Double Concerto' with violinist Vadim Repin, cellist Truls Mork and the Gewandhausorchester reached number 17.
