Biography

Founded in 1986 in Rocha, Bolívar, Rey de Rocha is Colombia’s most influential sound system and independent record label championing Caribbean urban music, particularly Champeta. Originally named El Dios de Rocha, it began with modest speakers in a local bar and evolved into a powerful cultural force after relocating to Cartagena, promoting genres like Dancehall, Reggae, Salsa, Soca, and Raggamuffin. Rey de Rocha has played a central role in developing the Champeta scene, producing over 1,000 tracks and launching the careers of artists such as El Afinaito, Mr. Black el Presidente, Papo Man, Twister el Rey, Kevin Florez, and Luister la Voz. Known for their signature “Con Placas” live versions—recorded at concerts and events featuring key figures like DJ Chawala and Sobri Music—the label combines production, distribution, and performance into a single grassroots platform. In addition to weekly parties that attract massive crowds, Rey de Rocha made history as the first sound system to perform in Europe, marking a major milestone for Colombian Caribbean music abroad.
