Biography

Retirement Party, an American emo band from Chicago, Illinois. The group initially started as a duo named Sunglasses on a Plane in Troy, Michigan, fronted by Avery Springer and released the EP Excess Company. After changing their name to Retirement Party and adding guitarist Nick Cartwright, bassist Kevin Mandell, and drummer James Ringness, they self-released their first EP, Strictly Speaking, in 2017. In early 2018, the band signed with Boston-based label Counter Intuitive Records and released their debut full-length album, Somewhat Literate. The song "Passion Fruit Tea" was featured on NPR Music's "Songs We Love." In 2020, they released their second full-length album, Runaway Dog. The band announced their split in 2022 via social media. They released three final songs and the self-titled EP Retirement Party on June 15, 2022.
