Rare Essence, a go-go band from Washington, D.C., was formed in 1976 by childhood friends Quentin "Footz" Davidson, Andre "Whiteboy" Johnson, Michael "Funky Ned" Neal, and John Jones. The group initially played Top 40 hits but soon adopted the go-go style. By 1979, Rare Essence had established a strong local following and released their first live album, Live at Breeze's Metro Club (1986). In 1987, they released another live album, Live at Celebrity Hall/Live at the Metro Club, which included the hit single "Body Moves". Their most successful single, "Work the Walls" (1992), reached number 68 on the US Billboard R&B chart. The band continued to release albums such as So What You Want? (1994) and We Go On And On (1998). In 2009, Rare Essence performed at an inaugural ball.
