Biography
Best known for his 2005 single "Bullah Ki Jaana," which topped the charts in both India and Pakistan, Rabbi Shergill is an Indian musician influenced by Punjabi music, Sufi music, Indian pop music, Gurbani texts, and western influences like rock & roll. He was born as "Gurpreet Singh Shergill" on April 16, 1973, and raised by a Delhi-based family that included his father (a Sikh preacher) and his mother (a Punjabi poet). After sharpening his songwriting skills as a composer of commercial jingles for various companies, he signed with Phat Phish Records and released his debut album, Rabbi, in 2004. Rabbi featured the song "Bulla Ki Jana," which was based on a classic Kafi poem and became a Number 1 single in India. Naming artists like Bruce Springsteen, Led Zeppelin, and Aerosmith as his favorites, Shergill built a bridge between traditional Punjabi music and a more modern, urban sound, which turned Rabbi into one of the year's most popular releases. His second album, Avengi Ja Nahin, followed in 2008, and his third record â the aptly-titled III â was released in 2012. During the rest of the decade, he released a series of standalone singles (including tracks like 2019's "Raj Singh") and composed music for both Hindi and Punjabi soundtracks. Meanwhile, Rabbi continued to occupy a space in the Indian mainstream, with songs like "Tere Bin" showing up on India's Shazam chart as late as 2023.
