Biography
Preston Haynes Love was an American saxophonist, bandleader, and songwriter. Love began a career as a sideman during the big band era, playing with bands including those of Lucky Millinder and Fats Waller before joining the Count Basie Orchestra in 1945. Love performed on the Count Basie hit record âOpen the Door Richardâ (1947), which reached Number 1. Love later collaborated with artists including Lena Horne, Billie Holiday, and Ray Charles. In the 1960s, Love served as a house bandleader for Motown on the West Coast, performing with Marvin Gaye, The Temptations, and Aretha Franklin. Love also recorded with Frank Zappa on the album Freak Out! (1966) and toured into the 2000s. Albums include Preston Love's Omaha Bar-B-Q (1970) and Omaha Blues (2001). Love was inducted into the Nebraska Music Hall of Fame in 1998 and authored the book A Thousand Honey Creeks Later: My Life in Music from Basie to Motown and Beyond (1997). Love died in 2004.
