Biography
Real name Darryl Gibson, American rapper Positive K was born in New York's Bronx district on August 9, 1967. Witnessing the birth of hip-hop at parties organized by DJs Grandmaster Flash and Busy Bee, he formed the group Disco Cousins under the name Baby Breeze, then joined Five-Percent Nation and Almighty God Committee, before pursuing a solo career as Positive K. After a debut single in 1987, the rapper signed to First Priority Music teamed up with MC Lyte for the hit "I'm Not Havin' It", which reached #16 on the rap charts in 1989, then left the label and went on to collaborate with Big Daddy Kane, Jay-Z, Sauce Money, Brand Nubian and Grand Puba. In 1992, Island Records released his hardcore debut album The Skills Dat Pay da Bills, featuring the track "I Got a Man", which reached No. 14 on the Billboard Hot 100 and No. 1 on the rap charts (No. 43 in the UK). As well as appearing on the Beavis and Butt-Head series and the soundtrack to the film The Beavis and Butt-Head Experience (1993), Positive K recorded a string of singles including "Black Cinderella" (1996) and, following the release of the compilation Back to the Old School (2008), collaborated with Greg Nice on the album Gr8te Minds (2017).
